Only a month after the December 2009 conviction in Italy of American exchange student Amanda Knox, the prosecutor in the case, Giuliano Mignini, was sentenced to 16 months in prison for “abuse of office” during a separate murder investigation.
As reported by The Times Online and AOL News, while investigating “one of the most sensational crimes in Florence’s history,” the Monster of Florence serial murders – the inspiration for the movie Silence of the Lambs – Mignini conducted illegal wiretapping of police officers and journalists.
This development may cast doubt on the credibility of Mignini’s conviction of Amanda Knox, and lend weight to her current appeals process.
