Unsolved Mystery

From the point of view of the pharmaceutical industry, the AIDS problem has already been solved. After all, we already have a drug which can be sold at the incredible price of $8,000 an annual dose, and which has the added virtue of not diminishing the market by actually curing anyone.”

  2. I don’t think we can yet cure AIDS. But it has become a disease that can be managed and life span extended with some quality as well. They can’t cure my glaucoma but as long as I have the check ups and use the drops I am OK and I really appreciate that because my other eye is damaged and little sight from that one. My coronary artery disease can only be “managed” too. Of course the pharm industry is an out of control rip off. Have read sci-fi where they invent a disease, develop a way to spread it already having manufactured a cure for profit which can be extorted from the stricken. Does not seem so far fetched to me at all. My question is what can they do with the profits if they already own everything in the world anyway?

    • Carl, thanks for this personal comment – which illustrates clearly that this healthcare issue extends far beyond just AIDS. I’m so sorry to hear about your eyes and your heart. Yes, they can be “managed,” but at what cost? And why must we go broke paying wealthy corporations extortion money in exchange for health? You – we all – deserve not to be bled in order to stay alive. Limping toward the poorhouse in bad health, mentally and emotionally stressed and strained by the extortion tactics of our corporate-friendly, inhumane healthCARE (ironic, isn’t it?) system is not what you or any of us in this “managed” (by the wealthy 1%) democracy deserve.

So yeah, you’re right. Your pharmaceutical industry sic-fi reference is, I believe, not at all far fetched. In fact, it strikes me as the wave of the future. And I would so love to know the answer to your question: why chose profits over humanity when they already own the world? What good will all that money be to them when there’s no one left alive?
